About

English biblical scholar and linguist who is known for translating the Bible into English. He could speak seven languages and was proficient in ancient Hebrew and Greek. His translation was the first English Bible to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts. He was condemned for heresy and was executed by strangulation and then burned at the stake in 1536.

Before Fame

In 1512, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Magdalen Hall, University of Oxford.

Trivia

He was a chaplain and a tutor.  In 1530, he wrote The Practice of Prelates, opposing Henry VIII of England's wish to annul his marriage to Catherine Of Aragon.

Family Life

His brother was Sir William Tyndale of Deane, Northumberland.
