A prominent member of the Democratic party who was a U.S. Senator from South Dakota from 1987 to 2005. He was the U.S. Senate Majority Leader from 2001 to 2003.

Before Fame

He served in the United States Air Force before being elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1978.

Trivia

While he was the Senate Majority Leader his office received a letter containing anthrax and thus became a target of the 2001 anthrax attacks.

Family Life

He married Linda Hall, who was Miss Kansas in 1976, in 1984.

Associated With

He was Barack Obama 's nominee to serve as the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) in the Cabinet, but withdrew his name from contention.
