About

Journalist and broadcaster known for his extensive career with ABC News, for being ABC News' Senior National Correspondent, for serving as ABC's Chief Foreign Correspondent from 2013 to 2018, and for co-anchoring the ABC News show Nightline from 2005 to 2013. He is also known for being the Chief White House Correspondent from 1999 to 2005 and for appearing on Good Morning America and World News Tonight.

Before Fame

He graduated from Lawrence University in 1982 with a degree in English. He served as editor of the student newspaper, The Lawrentian, until he graduated. His journalism career began at The New Republic magazine, followed by a role as a reporter and editor at the Legal Times in Washington, D.C. He then worked as a correspondent and anchor for Court TV from 1992 to 1997. His big break and the start of his relationship with ABC News happened when he began working as the Chief White House Correspondent in 1999.

Trivia

He appeared in a video with Elmo from Sesame Street as part of the "Spread Kindness, Share the Laughter" initiative. He has received several prestigious awards for his journalism, including the George Foster Peabody Award, an Emmy Award, the Merriman Smith Award from the White House Correspondents' Association twice, and the Thurgood Marshall Journalism Award. ​

Family Life

He was born in Chicago and raised in Mount Prospect and Barrington Hills, Illinois. He has a brother named James. He married Karen Osler in the 1980s and they eventually divorced. He married Johanna Cox in 2015, and they have three children together.
