Shiro Kuramata

Japanese furniture and interior designer who became known for his innovative use of materials such as Perspex and Lucite.

Before Fame

He graduated from the Kuwasawa Insititue of Design in 1956 and established his Kuramata Design Office nine years later.

Trivia

His most famous works of art included "How High the Moon," a steel mesh chair, and "Miss Blanche," a chair made of acrylic flowers. The latter piece was sold for $86,000 at a 1997 London auction.

Family Life

He was born in Tokyo, Japan.

Associated With

He and fellow 20th-century Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto both won prestigious awards for their respective furniture and fashion creations.
