Robert Knopwood

English-born cleric who arrived in Australia in 1804 and kept a now famous diary of his time as a chaplain and magistrate in the developing country.

Before Fame

He graduated from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and was subsequently ordained as a priest.

Trivia

His thirty-year diary became part of the permanent collection at Sydney's Mitchell Library.

Family Life

He was born in Norfolk, England to Robert Knopwood and Elizabeth Barton Knopwood. In his adulthood, Robert Knopwood became the father to an adopted daughter.

Associated With

He submitted his resignation from his magistrate position to New South Wales governor, Lachlan Macquarie, in 1822.
