About

Known as the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church who took over for Benedict XVI in March of 2013. He made waves throughout the world for his modern views on homosexuality and contraception.

Before Fame

Ordained a priest in 1969, he rose through the ranks to become Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and cardinal in 2001.

Trivia

In contrast to his predecessor's somewhat aloof style, he showed himself to be a people of the people, often mingling with the faithful.

Family Life

He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the eldest of five children of Italian immigrants. He passed away at the Saint Martha House, Vatican City.

Associated With

It was Pope John Paul II who elevated him to the post of Cardinal in 2001.
