Prior to being drafted, he attended Lipscomb University where he was named Atlantic Sun "Freshman of the Year" in 2007.

He made his major league debut pitching on June 6, 2011 as a member of the Rockies.

He is a native of Unionville, Tennessee. His brother Hunter is also a professional pitcher.
