Family Life

He married his high school sweetheart, Helen Mary Walker, in 1952. They had four children together before divorcing. He later married Evelyn L. Garriott. His son Richard Garriott also became an astronaut.

He and Edward Gibson were both members of NASA Astronaut Group 4 in 1965.
