Newbery Medal-winning author and illustrator of children's books. Her best known works include the Mr. Small series, Strawberry Girl and Judy's Journey.

Before Fame

She attended Ohio State University, graduating in 1915 with a BS in education and a teaching certificate.

Trivia

Her first historical novel, Phebe Fairchild: Her Book was inspired by her life in Connecticut. 

Family Life

In 1921, she married Arthur Covey. He was a widower with two young children. In 1929, she and Covey had a son named Stephen.
