She studied for a brief period at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City. She worked as a model before starting her career in acting.

She reportedly turned down a role in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales to pursue her studies.

Her father, a percussionist, once toured with Nina Simone. She has been married to Portuguese singer Salvador Sobral since 2018.
