About

In the early 1900s, this Democratic Party politician served as the state of Idaho's fifth Governor. During his two years in office, he laid the groundwork for the creation of Idaho State University.

Before Fame

Before taking office as Idaho's youngest governor (a distinction he continued to hold well into the 21st Century), he worked in the mining industry and served in the Idaho State House of Representatives.

Trivia

During the Spanish-American War, he fought in the Philippines with an Idaho volunteer regiment.

Family Life

He spent his early years in Newport and Louisville, Kentucky, and later settled in Emmett, Idaho. He was married to Ruth Maynard.

He and Moses Alexander both held office as Governor of Idaho during the early Twentieth Century.
