Denys Lasdun

About

Designed the Royal National Theatre in London; it has since gained recognition as a foremost example of Brutalist design. Known for his distinct use of cluster blocks as seen in such structures as Bethnal Green and Keeling House.

Before Fame

He studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture. He was hired by Wells Coates as a junior in the firm. He eventually became a partner in Berthold Lubetkin's practice.

Trivia

He designed buildings for many colleges and universities, including the University of London, the Fitzwilliam College, SOAS, and the Institute of Education.

Family Life

He married artist Susan Bendit and had three children.

Associated With

His work was compared by some to that of Frank Lloyd Wright.
