Kenzo Tange

About

Proponent of the Metabolist movement who won the Pritzker Prize in 1987. Considered one of the 20th century's greatest architects.

Before Fame

He was inspired to become an architect after poring over drawings for the Palace of the Soviets. He attended the University of Tokyo, where he was taught by Hideto Kishida and Shozo Uchida.

Trivia

He won the design competition for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in 1949.

Family Life

His family raised him in China until one of his uncles died, then they moved back to Japan. His son, Paul, also became an architect.

Associated With

He was influenced by Le Corbusier as a young man.
