Before Fame

He earned a degree in accounting from Northwestern University and taught a class in Japanese language at the University of Chicago.

Trivia

He appeared several times on Broadway, including in the acclaimed Auntie Mame, which was nominated for eight Tony Awards and received three.

Family Life

His parents were Japanese immigrants. After the Pearl Harbor tragedy, he and his brother attempted to join the U.S. Army and were laughed away.
