Yoshinori Ohsumi

About

Japanese cell biologist known for his work on the subject of autophagy. He has worked for the University of Tokyo, the National Institute for Basic Biology, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 2016, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries related to autophagy. 

Before Fame

He did his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Tokyo. He also spent some time conducting research at Rockefeller University in New York in the 1970s.

Trivia

He has received a number of awards besides the Nobel Prize, including the Asahi Prize, the Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences, and the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences. He has been featured in popular publications such as Scientific American and the New York Times. 

Family Life

His wife Mariko is also a scientist and has co-authored many academic articles with him.
