Yam Kim-fai

Twentieth-century Chinese opera singer remembered for her distinctive low voice and her ability to play male operatic roles. She most famously appeared in productions of The Reincarnation of Lady Plum Blossom, The Peony Pavilion, and The Legend Of The Purple Hairpin.

Before Fame

She began singing professionally when she was just a child; in her teens, she began her vocal training with opera singer Wong Lui Hap.

Trivia

She was one of the founding members of a Cantonese company called the New Voice Opera Troupe.

Family Life

She was born in Nanhai, China, and she later settled in Hong Kong.

She was a contemporary of New Zealand-born opera singer Joan Hammond.
