About

Austrian film director, screenwriter, and actor known for his acclaimed drama film '38 - Vienna Before the Fall. He also directed the 1972 musical comedy film, The Count of Luxemburg. As an actor, he portrayed Robert in Michael Haneke's 1997 psychological horror film, Funny Games. 

Before Fame

In the early 1950s, he worked as an assistant to director and screenwriter Berthold Viertel. 

Trivia

He has taught at the Film Academy Vienna and Vienna University. '38 - Vienna Before the Fall was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 59th Academy Awards. He made three total appearances on camera as an actor throughout his career.

Family Life

He was married to actress Christiane Horbiger from 1962 to 1967. His uncle, Paul Henreid, was a famous actor who appeared in Casablanca.
