William Wycherley

Before Fame

During his childhood, he spent time in France and moved near Charente for his education. He attended the Queen's College in Oxford, but it is unclear if he graduated.

He converted to Roman Catholicism before reverting back to the Church of England.

Family Life

His father, Daniel Wycherley, worked in service of the Marquess of Winchester. His mother's name was Bethia. In 1679 he married Lady Jane Needham, but it was not a happy relationship.

His plays were performed under the rule of Charles II of England, who enjoyed and supported Restoration-era comedy.
