About

American architect known for designing many significant structures in Chicago, Illinois. Most notable are the Chicago Water Tower, the limestone entrance of Rosehill Cemetery, and the first University of Chicago; the latter was later demolished.

Before Fame

He studied engineering and architecture in New York before moving to Chicago in 1853.

Trivia

Many of the structures he designed were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. He served as mayor of Highland Park, Illinois for a time. He is also accredited for having worked on the Joliet Prison, which is featured in the popular film, The Blues Brothers

Family Life

He was born in Southwick, Massachusetts. He is buried at Rosehill Cemetery on Chicago's north side.
