Before Fame
When he was 17, he apprenticed as a mechanical fitter with the Midland & Great Western Railway. He wrote stories and poems for a magazine called The Shamrock.
Trivia
He became an organizer for the Irish Transport and General Workers Union. He became involved with unions at the age of 22, while working for railway workshops in Dublin. He was eventually charged with making anti-war speeches in 1915, which led to a sentence of 15 year of penal servitude.

He is the son of Benjamin Partridge and Ellen Hall. His older brother is Felix Partridge.
