Scottish caricaturist, engraver and publisher who migrated to the United States and became famous for his political cartoons. He created satirical cartoons, landscapes and book illustrations. He is best known for his 1814 cartoon titled The Hartford Convention or Leap No Leap. He also created well-known cartoons about the War of 1812.

He published political caricatures in Edinburgh and London before moving to the United States.

Trivia

He worked in etching, line and stipple engraving. He is credited with introducing cartooning in the United States, with caricature and speech balloons. His children's books included 1808's Tom, the Piper's Son. While in the United States, he worked predominantly in Philadelphia and New York.
