Character actor who appeared in such films as High Plains Drifter and Westbound and in such TV series as Bonanza and Gunsmoke. He began as a professional football player and was recruited to western films for his tough and rugged appearance.

He played pro football for the Philadelphia Eagles during the late 1940s and early 1950s.

He played the role of Finn on the television series, Tales of the Vikings, from 1959-1960.

Family Life

His wife, Britta Barnes, was also an actor. The couple's two children, Lara Wendel and Michel Barnes, also pursued acting careers.
