She is politically active and has been the special guest and performer for many charitable events, including Make Poverty History.  She performed her hit song "Fast Car" at the 2024 Grammys alongside Luke Combs who released his own version in 2023.

She briefly dated writer Alice Walker in the mid-1990s. She has a sister named Aneta.
