During the 1960s, '70s, and early '80s, this Kentucky-raised Republican served his home state in the United States House of Representatives.

Before Fame

Before beginning his political career, he was a pre-medical student at Western Kentucky State College. After receiving his M.D. from the University of Tennessee, he became a World War II military medic and subsequently established a Kentucky-based medical practice.

Trivia

He was the first Republican U.S. Representative to vocally oppose the Vietnam War and to call for the conflict's imminent end.

Family Life

His father and brother (both named James Carter), served as Kentucky Circuit Judges, and his sister, Pearl Carter Pace, became Kentucky's first female sheriff.

Associated With

His sister, a personal friend of President Dwight Eisenhower, chaired the Eisenhower administration's Foreign Claims Settlement Commission.
