Túpac Amaru II was his descendant. Primary school number 239 had been named in his honor, but it closed in the year 2001. Historian El Inca Garcilaso De La Vega claimed that King Philip II disapproved of the public execution of Tupac Amaru. Tupac Amaru's death in the year 1572 has generated great interest centuries after.

He was the son of Manco Inca Yupanqui. His siblings were Diego De Castro Titu Cusi Yupanqui and Sayri Túpac.
