Stan Brakhage

About

American filmmaker who is widely considered one of the most influential creators of experimental films. Some of his most famous include 23rd Psalm Branch and the five-part Dog Star Man series.

Before Fame

He attended Dartmouth College on scholarship but dropped out and completed his first film, titled Interim, at age nineteen.

Trivia

He employed a number of then-unique film techniques, including scratching and painting directly onto film.

Family Life

He was adopted by Ludwig and Clara Brakhage three weeks after his birth. He had two sons with his second wife, Marilyn.

Associated With

He used the music of composer and friend John Cage for his film In Between, which became his first color film.
