Remembered for her novel Krishnakali, her autobiographical work Sunhu Taat Yeh Akath Kahani, and her numerous short stories, she was a 1982 recipient of India's prestigious Padma Shri.

Before Fame

When she was just twelve years old, she published her first short fiction piece in a youth magazine called Natkhat. Three decades later, she published her debut novel, Lal Haveli.

Family Life

The daughter of a teacher and a scholar, she grew up in Gujarat, India. Her marriage to teacher Shuk Deo Pant produced four children.

She and Jaishankar Prasad are two of the most well known Hindi fiction writers of the twentieth century.
