Saya San

About

Famous for his key role in the Saya San Rebellion of the early 1930s, this doctor, Buddhist monk, and ardent anti-colonialist was executed as a result of his opposition to British rule.

Before Fame

After training at his village's monastery, he worked as a farmer and a medicine man.

Trivia

The members of his "Galon Army" declared him to be their regent.

Family Life

Born Yar Kyaw, he grew up in Shwebo, Burma, as the child of Daw Hpet and U Kyaye. His marriage to Ma Kay resulted in children named Ma Sein and Ko Po Thin.

Associated With

Several decades after San's death, Aung San suu Kyi (whose father, Aung San, had successfully liberated Burma from British control) fought for democracy in Burma.
