In February 2017, her mother posted a sensational Instagram photo to announce she was pregnant with Rumi and her brother. The photo would go on to break records for the number of likes and comments on the app.

Her name was purportedly inspired by the Sunni Muslim poet Jalauddin Rumi.

Her older sister, Blue Ivy Carter, was born in 2012. Her twin brother is named Sir.
