Royal Air Force Auxiliary pilot who led the escape from Stalag Luft III, a German prisoner of war camp, during World War II.

Before Fame

He was an excellent skier and competed while attending Cambridge. He also was interested in law in addition to learning to fly.

Trivia

He organized more than one escape attempt while a prisoner of war in Germany.

Family Life

He was born in Springs, Transvaal, South Africa and later moved to England where his allegiances lied in regards to military duty.

Associated With

The film The Great Escape is based on the escape he organized and led. He is portrayed with the slightly different name of Roger Bushell in the film and was played by Richard Attenborough.
