Before Fame
In his early adulthood years, he took art classes in New York City, Florence, and Rome. He later taught art at the United States Military Academy (in West Point, New York).

His most famous work, The Embarkation of the Pilgrims, was mounted in the rotunda of the United States Capitol building.

He was born and raised in New Rochelle, New York. His marriage resulted in sixteen children, including two artist sons: Julian Alden Weir and John Ferguson Weir.
