He wrote his debut novel, When Darkness Comes, while he was in training as a primary school teacher.

Trivia

His first Red House Children's Book Award was for Brother in the Land. He went on to receive the same honor for Room 13, Nightmare Stairs, and Blitzed.

He grew up in Yorkshire, England. At the age of fifteen, he dropped out of school to work for a newspaper. His wife's name is Brenda.
