Early in his career, he worked as a cinema and arts critic for the New York Post and the New York Daily News.

An occasional actor, he appeared on The Gong Show and in the film version of Myra Breckinridge.

Family Life

He grew up in Fort Worth, Texas as the son of James and Jewell Reed. He later attended Louisiana State University.
