An American cartoonist and author, he is best known for his 1963 short story, Eight O'Clock in the Morning. His other published works of short fiction include Nightfall on the Dead Sea and Turn Off the Sky.

He studied theology at the University of Chicago and subsequently spent four years in Paris, where he met and was inspired by several prominent poets of the Beat generation.
