Remembered for his neoclassical chamber, orchestral, and vocal music works, this twentieth-century British composer most famously wrote the song "The Jackdaw" and the operas The Clandestine Marriage and The Captive.

In the late 1940s, he studied in Paris with the famous French composer Nadia Boulanger.

Beginning in the 1970s, he taught music at the University of Reading in England.

Family Life

His 1974 opera, Clytemnestra, was composed for his mezzo-soprano vocalist wife, Maureen Lehane. His son from an earlier marriage, James Wishart, also had a career as a composer.
