Anatomist who conducted research on the effects of diabetes and it's possible treatment. His work led to the first successful islet-cell transplant in a human being in 1989.

He taught at the Washington University School of Medicine after attending Ohio State University and the University of Minnesota.

Trivia

He was the first to try to combat diabetes through an islet transplantation, where isolated islets from a donor pancreas is transplanted into another person.
