Before Fame
He studied at military academies in Hungary before volunteering for the Serbian army. In the early 1920s, he was one of the key figures associated with Plamen (The Flame), a leftist publication.

He belonged to the Yugoslavian Communist Party for over twenty years.
Family Life
He was born in Zagreb. He was married to Bela Krleza; the two died only eight months apart.
