Conservative economist whose theories guided President Reagan. He received the 1976 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, as well as the National Medal of Science and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (both in 1988).
Before Fame
He went to Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he studied mathematics with the intention of becoming an actuary. He went on to attend the University of Chicago's graduate program in economics.

He was a leader of the Chicago school of economics.
Family Life
He met his wife and fellow economist, Rose Director, in the early 1930s. He had a son named David and a daughter named Janet.
