He was born in Herne Hill and made his first-class debut in 1954.

Trivia

He had a successful post-playing career, managing Surrey (1979-1986) and England (1986-1992), and was director of coaching for the ECB (1992-1997).

Family Life

His son is the former English wicket-keeper Alec Stewart.
