He began his professional career as a director working on music videos as well as commercials.

He received an MTV Movie Award for Best Action Sequence for three separate films: Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys II, and The Rock.

He was raised by his adoptive parents Harriet, a bookstore owner and child psychiatrist, and Jim, a CPA.
