Before Fame

She began learning to sail at seven years old in San Diego, California. At ten, she completed a 5,000-mile, 6-month cruise in Mexico with her family on a sailboat. She then began surfing at fifteen and competed in several international competitions. Then in 2006, she left California on her sailboat, documenting her adventures along the way on her blog Swell Voyage. 

Trivia

She surfed in several private contests for the UCSB surf team while studying at UC Santa Barbara. She eventually competed and won at the NSSA Nationals, making her the 2002 College Women's National Champion in surfing. 

Family Life

She was born and raised in San Diego, California. Her parents are often listed as the inspiration for her adventures.
