United States judge who served on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1909 to 1924. He was later appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit where he served from 1924 to 1961.

Before Fame

He majored in philosophy at Harvard College and subsequently attended Harvard Law School where he graduated with honors.

Trivia

His writing and eloquence elevated him to fame outside the legal profession, particularly a speech he gave in Central Park during World War II.

Family Life

He married Frances Fincke in 1902, and the couple had three daughters.

He was a supporter of the political career of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.
