After making his acting debut in 1991 in an episode of Roseanne, he then went on to star as Desmond in the drama City of Hope.

Born to Joel and Janet Smollett, he has five siblings: three brothers, Jake, Jussie, and Jocqui, and two sisters, Jazz and Jurnee.
