John Mew

About

British orthodontist, known as the founder of orthotropics and mewing. Mewing grew in popularity in 2019 after it was shared on social media by influencers and received mainstream media coverage for creating a more snatched jawline. It is a form of do-it-yourself oral posture training named after Mew and his son Michael Gordon Mew and is described most simply by Mew as "stand up straight and shut your mouth". He has over 30,000 followers on TikTok under the handle prof.mew.

Before Fame

He was educated at Rose Hill preparatory school in Tunbridge Wells (1935-1942) and then at Tonbridge School (1942-1945). He graduated in dentistry at University College London (1948-1953), and then trained in orthognathic surgery at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead (1953-1956). 

Trivia

His patented the term orthotropics to refer to a form of oral posture training that claims to guide facial growth, but is not supported by mainstream orthodontists. His orthodontic methods consisted of widening and advancing the upper jaw using expanders, changing the patient's diet, and having the patient adopt a correct resting place for the tongue, He wrote two textbooks and published many articles internationally on this subject. He became president of the Southern Counties Branch of the British Dental Association in 1971. Since 2000, he spent much of his time lecturing about his techniques. Before his death, he was a professor of orthotropics at the London School of Facial Orthotropics.

Family Life

He was born in Heathfield, East Sussex, England. He married Josephine Ann Mew in 1964 and they had three children together. He passed away peacefully at age 96 at his castle in Heathfield.
