John Gilmore

About

Major collaborator with Sun Ra and his Arkestra from the 1950s to the 1990s. He has also appeared as the sideman for other artists like Art Blakely.

Before Fame

He started playing tenor saxophone while in the Air Force and went on to almost exclusively collaborate with Sun Ra.

Trivia

When Sun Ra passed away, Gilmore took over directing the Arkestra.

Family Life

He was born in Summit, Missouri but raised in Chicago.

Gilmore played with Earl Fatha Hines before meeting Sun Ra.
