Before Fame

He began his professional jazz career when he was 15. He created his first composition "Tiber Rag" for a 1962 high-school Latin project.

He composed the theme song for National Public Radio's long-running talk show "Fresh Air," hosted by Terry Gross.

Family Life

He married dancer Mary Harrison in 1970, with whom he fathered a son, Max.
