Known for his television writing work on such popular British situation comedies as Are You Being Served?, 'Allo 'Allo!, and Come Back Mrs. Noah, this author also had a career as an entertainer, appearing on the comedy program Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In.

Before Fame

He began writing professionally in the late 1950s and made his screen acting debut in the 1960 film School for Scoundrels.

Trivia

He and composer Jim Parker collaborated on a two-volume set of poetry and music recordings titled Captain Beaky & His Band.

Family Life

After his seven-year marriage to fashion model Dawn Bailey ended in divorce, he was very briefly the husband of English television actress Joanna Lumley.

Associated With

In an uncredited appearance in the 1964 Beatles movie A Hard Day's Night, he shared the screen with drummer Ringo Starr during a scene set in a disco.
