He declined the offer of a Noble Peace Prize, while his rival Albert Camus did not. He believed that writers should not become institutions.

Family Life

He had a lifelong open relationship with fellow philosopher and writer Simone de Beauvoir. His mother was Albert Schweitzer's first cousin.
