She was only twelve years old when she began running with her older sister. By the time she'd entered college, she had begun teaching fitness classes and thereafter became a high school health and physical education teacher.

She has a daughter named Brooke from a previous marriage. In July 2016, she married Andrew Barton, who also has a son named Knox. In December 2017, they had a daughter named Skye together.
