Jacqueline Ceballos

About

Notable for her feminist activism, Ceballos headed the National Organization for Women's New York office and founded a group known as Veteran Feminists of America.

Before Fame

After studying vocal music at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, she relocated to New York to pursue a career as an opera performer. Before becoming an activist, she opened an opera company -- El Teatro Experimental de la Opera -- in her husband's native Colombia.

Trivia

In the early 21st century, she relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, to be near her dancer daughter, Michele Ceballos.

Family Life

She and her six siblings grew up in Mamou, Louisiana, as the children of Adele Domas and Louis Michot. Her brief marriage to Alvaro Ceballos began in 1951 and produced four children.

Associated With

Around the time of her separation from her husband, Ceballos read Betty Friedan's groundbreaking work The Feminine Mystique and made the decision to devote her life to feminist activism.
